Site specific installations: The Ministry of Art at Festival One 2026

Membrane

Exploring the idea of “thin places”, this installation, a horizontal suspension of fine silk, serves as a threshold between the physical and the intangible. Printed with the foliage of New Zealand’s native trees, the fabric becomes a living map of the local landscape, yet its fluid movement in the wind suggests something far less anchored.

Looking up through the silk, the trees above visible beyond the inked leaf impressions might evoke a "thin" or liminal space—a fleeting moment where the veil between worlds becomes translucent. As the silk ripples and catches the light, it mirrors the shifting nature of spiritual encounter, inviting the viewer to pause in the presence of the divine.

Understory Over

This installation features a horizontal expanse of vibrant yellow silk, printed with the intricate forms of foliage from the New Zealand forest understory. Suspended and responsive to the air, the fabric acts as a conduit for the unseen, capturing the movement of the wind as it ripples across the botanical impressions.

By focusing on the understory—the quiet, shaded layers of the bush—this work explores the concept of "thin" or liminal spaces. As the silk undulates, it creates a shifting threshold where the density of the earth-bound forest meets the weightless, spiritual realm, inviting viewers to linger in the presence of the divine.
